LoRaWAN and TTN in a Smart Village

Small sensor messages from the village

LoRaWAN connects sensors to a data platform over radio. Soil moisture, temperature and meter readings are potential applications in small villages. Suitability depends on the location, transmission interval and operation.

How does the network work?

A sensor sends small data packets. A gateway receives the radio message and forwards it over an internet connection to a network server. An application processes the readings. LoRa is the radio technology; LoRaWAN is the network protocol built on it.

What is The Things Network?

The Things Network (TTN) is a community built around LoRaWAN. Its documentation explains devices, gateways and network connectivity. A gateway visible on a community map does not guarantee reception at a particular sensor or a municipal service commitment.

From pilot to reliable operation

Before starting a pilot, clarify mounting locations, antenna height, power and internet access. Terrain, buildings and vegetation affect reception. On-site measurements, maintenance, responsibilities, data access and running costs are all part of planning.
