When the road
sweats.

Three hot days, one measurement site: how does road surface temperature change after a light-coloured surface treatment?

AN OBSERVATION FROM MARTINFELD

Warmer air.
Cooler road surface.

The reported daily road surface maxima fell from 56.1 to 50.5 °C. At the same time, the air temperature maximum rose from 36.2 to 37.2 °C.

COMBINING MEASUREMENTS

More than a temperature curve.

At the site, an infrared thermometer recorded the road surface, a weather station recorded air temperature and solar radiation, and a camera and radar recorded traffic. The data were analysed in ThingsBoard.

The post describes a drop in road surface temperature after treatment on 26 June. The light-coloured surface remained visible the following day.

LIMITS OF THE FINDINGS

Observed, but not yet fully explained.

Three days at one site do not replace a controlled long-term comparison. The exact treatment method had not yet been confirmed in the post. Lasting cooling or cost savings cannot be established from this evidence.

FOR MUNICIPALITIES AND PUBLIC WORKS TEAMS

Monitor interventions
with measurements.

Document the initial condition, intervention time and material. Compare several days and, if possible, an untreated section. Record weather, traffic, effort and costs together to interpret the observations more reliably.
